The Seaford, Delaware Flood June 2006

On Sunday, June 25, 2006, Seaford, Delaware, and some surrounding towns were flooded. Some areas recieved over 12 inches of rain. Sunday was one of the busiest days that the local services have seen. We saw fire engines from all over the area, two that we saw were being towed (one can only assume they broke down from over-use). Indian River rescue was here with their rescue boats. EMS services came from as far as Roxana.

It was absolutely crazy. There was an air of panic and disorder. As if the water problem wasn’t enough, people were crashing because they weren’t paying enough attention to the road. Just a little hint for the people who crashed- If there’s a flood and there’s water on the road one of two things should happen:

1) You should SLOW DOWN
2) Look to see if the water on the road is too deep for your car (if you’re not sure, please just turn around and find another route.) Too many people were careless and cars were flooded in obviously impassable areas, everywhere.

Oh, I almost forgot! 3) If another car is stuck, the road is impassable. YOU AREN’T GOING TO MAKE IT EITHER! I actually saw a car in water over it’s hood and a lady going into the water in her car thinking she could pass… Need I say more?

These are some pictures taken when the main storm subsided:

Flooded Walmart
Wal*mart under water… yeah this was well designed.
Employees had to be rescued by boat.

New River CrossingNew River Crossing
The Roadways became river crossings,

Water eroded part of this road way
And some roads became impassable or just washed away.

Water From Homes
Some homes became water front property.

Damn Dam
Dam 2Dam 3
Water rushed over this dam, taking chunks of the road out and damaging the integrity of this dam. Only time will tell if it will hold up because there’s more rain in the forecast.

  1. Thanks for the great pictures! I’m from Louisiana- I KNOW flooding. I watched my new car float out of my yard a few years back. Sigh. People either forget or just dont’ take seriously the force of water coming over a road…I suspect they will remember next time..

  2. Unbelievable. 12 inches of rain. Did the forecasters forecast this amount of rain for the area?

Great pictures Trina. Appreciate you keeing us all informed. How’s the damn holding up?

  3. Del-DOT declared that the damn dam is stable. The residents that were evacuated out of the Lofland Park nursing home are being moved back in. So I guess I’m safe, for now. I’ll post more pictures of the dam later.

They’re still expecting more rain. So when the sun does finally come out it’s gonna be terribly muggy.

  4. I have a sister on Holden Circle in New Castle. Where is it in relationship to the flooding?

  5. We’re probibally 1 hour south of New Castle. The heaviest rains fell from Linkwood, Maryland, to just East of Seaford, Delaware.

But the water has receded some and the sun came out today… now the question on most people’s mind is “Why didn’t I get flood Insurance”

  6. Thanks for sharing these pics. I grew up in Laurel, but transplanted to Tennessee. It’s bizarre to imagine that much water.

  7. My Dad lives on Ivy Street in Seaford. Do you know if it is flooded bad over that way or flooded at all. I spoke to dad a few days ago and he said things were fine.. but knowing my Dad he did not want me to worry. I live in Texas..

  8. Hi debbie,
We all Had alot of water.
Your Dad is right Ivy street is just fine.
The flooding was more toward the river.

  9. Thank you so much.. My Dad is 88 years old and very indepentent He does not like to ask for help or what me to worry. So I am never sure if what he is telling me is right or if I should be on the next plane Home. I usually get the calls when things are very bad or things have gone very wrong.
