Monday What A Day

It started out Ok.

It was a beautiful morning- 68 degrees with no humidity and a gentle breeze out of the East from the Atlantic Ocean. I had a lot to do so I got everything together early. I started out about 6:00am and when I arrived at the book store I pulled my laptop out of the briefcase and started checking websites only to find I had a couple of bad links. I jumped on the problem and corrected them. By then Trina had made me one of her great sausage, egg and cheese bagels and a cup of coffee. After I ate it, was time to hit the road.

I was off to a new house that I am remodeling because of poor workmanship. (That’s a whole other post) Anyway I start working and I am not there long when the owner says “Paul, it’s the Boss on the phone.” As he approached he was saying “Yes they are here and they are doing something.” About that time all the power goes off! So much for working! I talked to Trina for a moment, she let me know that the power was off because some Moron crew working on the new Lowes hit a power line and a little while later the same crew hit a gas main. I hung up and then we were trying to think of what we could do with no power to run the tools, when my cell phone rings and its Trina, AGAIN! She said excitedly, “Irene just called and told me the horses are out and she can’t catch them.” So we load up and head across town. Due to the flood we had, its about twenty minutes instead of ten to get home.

When we arrived at the farm, Irene was standing guard between the mares that were loose and the stallion that’s in the barn so he doesn’t get overly excited and freak-out. Wish I had a camera! She had gotten the doors to the barn closed most of the way and was standing in the opening with her arms open and a pitch fork in one hand. LOL

Anyway, the horses had run through the electrical fence at the gate area. But to be safe we walked the fence lines…tightening up all the lines and then we fixed the gate and put the horses away. Then, all was well once again. Off to work we go, again.

We arrive to the job site and started hustling, trying to get something done. By three o’clock we were finished. Cordy took off to go get his brother(who is still waiting for his truck to be fixed from the flood) I headed for the Books and Coffee store I helped out for a while and checked out my websites. Then it was time to close and head to Sam’s to get supplies for Tuesday morning’s catering gig for the state. Yes, they love our coffee and danishes…

I cancelled the aikido class; I thought it was more important to be ready for the job in the morning. Off we went to Sam’s. We got everything we needed; we even had time to stop at a friend’s house to pick up a couple of vases. On the way home I was saying “This is great! Its only 9:45pm! I’ll get a good nights sleep!” A few minutes later I told Trina I don’t know what it is, but something is going to happen. I just don’t know what!!! We get home, I grabbed a shower and jumped in bed. Oh yes, Sleep!

Then the phone rings…

It’s the neighbor, “We have an emergency out back. One of my horses was spooked and ran through my fence and it’s down [the electric fence]. Then the horse ran through your’s and your fence is down and a post is broken and the water where the hose hooks up is broken and the water is spewing [like a geyser out of the ground] and the horse has a big hole in it’s shoulder bigger then your hand!” So I freaked out, jumped out of bed, the kids must have heard me on the phone because when I got up they were all gone already. Trina crawled under the house and shut off the water to the pastures, Cordy pulled his Jeep out and put some light on the subject, and Wadde was helping the neighbor get his horse. When I got out there it looked bad. The horse was scared out of its mind.

We all decided to evaluate the situation, one step at a time. The neighbor pulled his wire out of my pasture and started tending to his injured horse. His wife and my boys started relocating their other horses to different pastures (where the fences were up and electrified) I started repair on my fence. I remembered that earlier that day (when the horses were out) I checked on the fence charger and noticed a fairly large nest of wasps in the box. Now, after the horse ran the box down, the wasps were drowsy (it was after midnight after all) and instead of swarming in the air, they were crawling everywhere in the grass, on our legs… but the box had to be fixed so that the fence could be “hot” At the time we didn’t even think about the fact that we were standing on wet ground playing with electric wires (remember the geyser? Well it was right next to the fence charger box) I guess at this point I should tell you that all the repairs were finished with no further injuries.

The neighbor led his injured horse out of our pasture and to his barn to get a better look at the wound (the vet was called and was on his way) It turned out not to be as bad as it looked out there in the dark. Her leg was filleted and would require some stitches and some aspirin for pain, but she’ll be fine.

By 1:30am, I was very tired. Trina and Cordy told everyone bye and stumbled home (I followed saying something like “wait for me” If you’ve ever see George Lopez, you’ll understand)

So, that was my Monday into Tuesday.

  1. That’s some kind of Monday you had there, Paul.

My hectic Mondays consist of having a few extra phone calls and letters and some deliveries to book into my warehouse.

I often wonder how people fit so much into one day when it seems to take me 2 days to do half as much, but I guess it’s what you’re used to that determines your normal daily expectations.

Glad to hear that, in this case, the water and electricity didn’t mix!
