Discrimination STILL EXISTS!

Yes, I AM a young woman!

Yes, I AM a partner in a FEW small businesses.

Yes, I AM A SIGNER ON THAT ACCOUNT!

I am so very tired of sexual discrimination. EVERY TIME I go into a store and write a business check the clerk taking the check calls everyone in the store to OK it.

Last time I went to Wal*mart, I needed to be in and out in a hurry. I know, my mistake, nothing happens in a hurry at Wal*mart. But on this particular day, the lines were very short, there weren’t many people in the store. A perfect scenario. I grabbed the 2 items I needed for the office (paper and a mailer) and got in the 10 items or less line. The lady in front of me was checked out and out of the way in less than 2 minutes, so I start thinking “Man, this is too perfect!”

Anyone ever tell you not to count your chickens before they hatch?B The clerk rang me up.. a whole $6.95! I filled out the check and handed it to her with my license. She stopped and got that STUPID expression.

“I’m sorry we don’t take third party checks” she says. I explained that I JUST signed the check in FRONT of her, it IS NOT a third party check.

Then she says, “Are YOU allowed to SIGN this check?” “I’m an owner” I say, “Of course I can sign this check”

Then the “red vest brigade” is called, we all know how long it takes them to show up.. I could have ran around the store 5 times before they got there and I’m not in shape. They FINALLY show up and the Red vested lady looks at me and askes the SAME question… “Are YOU ALLOWED to sign this check” I give the same reply followed by “I’m really in a hurry, please write all my license info on the check and just approve it so I can go”

The red vested lady didn’t like that I was polite I suppose, and says “I’ll be right back”. I watch her go to the phone and call my office, of course there’s no answer because I’m not there! Then she disappears behind a door for at least 10 minutes. When she get’s back she says “There was No answer” “DUH!” I thought, then I say “I know, that’s because I’m here. Trying to get there.”

Then an manager is called….. and they take longer to show up then the “red vest brigade.”

Finally after, no lie, 45 minutes, the check is approved.

I say all this to set you up for the following, NOT EVEN 5 MINUTES BEFORE I WENT IN, A PARTNER IN THE BUSINESS, A MAN IN HIS 40’S, WALKED THROUGH THE SAME LINE, USED THE SAME CHECK BOOK, DIDN’T EVEN HAVE HIS LICENSE, AND WAS IN AND OUT WITHOUT BEING QUESTIONED. NO RED VESTED BRIGADE WAS CALLED, NO PHONE CALLS WERE MADE, NO STUPID LOOKS!

It’s not like this was the first time, nor, I’m sure, will it be the last. But, COME ON! What do I have to do to get SOME RESPECT?GROW BALLS AND A MUSTACHE? It’s just absolutely ridiculous!

  1. You are right, that shoudn’t happen. Just be glad you weren’t the Black businessman in Florida who tried tho buy a few thousand dollars worth of gift cards for his company’s employees. He was legit, but WAL*MARTcouldn’t believe a Black man could be buying for that many employees. They didn’t just turn him down, they called the police and had him questioned. Do I hear LAWSUIT?

    All attempts should be made to avoid the neo-fascists known as WAL*MART.
    They treat their employees like slaves and have a documented history of not promoting women at the same rate as men. The lengths to which WAL*MART will go to crush union activity is also well documented . When management takes an employee in the office, there are two or more managers and the employee, who has no one to represent them or back up their version of what happened in the meeting. So, with no one there with the employee, what management says happend is backed up by their fascist co-managers and is, therefore, the “truth.” I know one young woman who told me that on her first day working for WAL*MART in Seaford, she had to view a 10 to 20 minute video about safety, then had to listen to about 2 hours of anti union propaganda.
    That tells you where WAL*MART’S priorities lie: (keeping complete domination over their work force). DOWN WITH WAL*MART & UP WITH SMALL BUSINESS!!!
    SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL SMALL BUSINESS PEOPLE.

  3. I didn’t really address “growing balls and a moustache” as a solution. The former are nice to have at times, but a lot of times are just in the way! Most of the problems I’ve gotten myself into have been because of them. So, if someone is born without them, I would advise leaving it that way.
    Really, I wouldn’t worry about physical things. (I’m too skinny, fat, tall, short, black, white, man, woman, etc.) I wouldn’t change a damn thing to stop discrimination. Confront the bastards and force them to change their illegal behavior!!!

    I hate to see women treated this way, equal work = equal pay! Just because your a woman doesn’t mean your inferior.

  5. I’m fairly sure poeple don’t realize discrimination is illegal.. it’s something they’ve grown up with… and they’re too stupid to know that they’re pigs!

    I don’t think people actually think “inferior” just “STUPID GIRL”

    ARE THERE ANY WOMEN OUT THERE WHO FEEL THE SAME WAY OR IS THE WOMEN’S RIGHTS MOVEMENT REALLY DEAD?

    Yes, Trina, but remember what Dharma, (from Dharma & Greg), said: “We can’t fault a pig for having a short neck.” Go to top management available and demand that they stop discrimination; tell them you will call corporate headquarters if they can’t handle the situation locally!
